Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

What is it?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy emphasizes the interplay between a client’s thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, behaviours and environment. Understanding what triggers specific thoughts, emotions and behaviours offers insight into your core beliefs and thinking that may be triggering emotional reactions. Once this is understood, reworking core beliefs and shifting your distorted thinking patterns can provide significant changes to your life and allow you to reframe your experiences to approach a more productive lens.

Once we can gain a better insight into how thinking patterns affect your well-being, we work to create healthier, adaptive patterns and beliefs that will serve your mental and emotional well-being more productively.

How does it work?

You will be assigned tasks between sessions that help you get a more concrete snapshot of how you think, feel, and behave that will also offer you strategies and skills to manage your presenting issues where we can actively work through your patterns together. This is a structured process and therapy usually takes between 6-20 sessions in Vancouver or via online counselling depending on the client and counselling goals.

Is it effective?

Cognitive therapy has been proven to be an effective therapy for anxiety, PTSD, and relationship issues and would be a great fit for you if you are committed to putting in the work between sessions to learn new skills and strategies to manage your well-being. It can also be integrated into other forms of therapy if you prefer less structure within your sessions, while still working toward concrete and workable goals.
