Support Systems This Holiday Season
What are support systems?
Simply put, a support system is made up of people who you can count on to be there for you when you need reinforcement.
Why are support systems important?
Support systems are arguably one of the most useful ways to get through the rough patches that we experience, and lord knows rough patches are not hard to find when the holidays come knockin’. When we are struggling with a decision, an idea, or situation, we often turn to the people who we trust to get perspective, or to have the comfort of a listening ear.
Support systems are useful in allowing us to feel less alone in what we’re going through whether it’s a positive or negative experience. While we are all pillars of strength on our own, people are beings who are based in connectedness. Support systems facilitate the feeling of being connected and allow for comfort and a greater sense of safety.
Some people have great support systems or networks, while others struggle in finding that connection. This holiday season, be aware of those who seem like they might want to let it out! If that person is you, don’t be afraid to confide in someone you trust.
Why Have Our Support Systems In Place Over the Holiday Season?
The holiday season can be the most joyous time of year, the most stressful time of year, and for some, the hardest time of year. Being aware of what we need, and honouring these feelings over the holiday season is key to feeling grounded.
For many, while the holiday season is sparkly and twinkly, there are also stresses like spending too much money, having to see that family member who ruffles our feathers, trying to reconcile with loss, the list is long and I’m sure you get the picture. Having your best friend, your partner, your siblings, your cat or dog, your community…who/whatever you love available to help ease the feeling of overwhelm is very important for self-care and stress management at this particular time of year.
