Counselling: The Beauty of A Safe Space & Creating Online Safety

The term “safe space” has been coming up a lot lately so let’s dive a little deeper…What is a safe space? What happens in a safe space? Can a safe space be created online?

A safe space is an area where individuals or groups of people are ensured:

-confidentiality

-safety

-unconditional positive regard

-support

-understanding

-a platform to tell their story

-a person(s) to listen to their narrative

Creating A Safe Space in Counselling:

In a safe space, you can choose to be supported in silence, or speak about what’s going on for you. “Holding space” for someone means that your counsellor stays with your narrative throughout your experience without judgement or attempting to fix you. Holding the space allows for you to feel supported, safe, and empowered. Also, feeling safe can allow you to explore yourself more deeply, which is when the best work happens.

Safe places are notable because they allow for a unique experience. It’s not often that we find a quiet space in our day-to-day to speak about our fears, triumphs and all that’s in between without receiving input, advice or a story about another person’s experience with something similar. A safe space is a place of understanding, a place for learning, and most importantly, a space for you to feel supported and a sense of deepening into the self. It’s important to keep in mind that we all prefer to express our feelings through our own outlets. For some, a safe space might be a dance or art studio.

In counselling, one of the most important aspects of the process is establishing and strengthening the working relationship between you and your therapist. This begins with a safe space and mutual understanding of the respect that is mutually offered in the session.

Can Safe Spaces Be Created Online?

If you’re not used to attending sessions online, the idea of a safe space may feel confusing. However, it is possible for yourself and your therapist to create a sense of safety, even though you are not in the same physical room. This might be done through a specific opening ritual, or simply, the counsellor keeping consistency in their “online office space” so that you know what to expect after your first session, just like in in-person sessions.

Your confidentiality remains your counsellor’s priority. Counsellors will ensure your privacy. It may be difficult for you to find a quiet place to chat while at home. I have seen clients sitting on their bathroom floors, in their cars, and sitting in larger closets. Your location doesn’t matter. What is of importance is your feeling safe to speak freely and comfortably. That’s when the magic happens!

If you are questioning your online experience or you’re feeling less comfortable, you can speak openly with your counsellor about how to create more safety so that you can make the most of your sessions! Online forums are great for some, and strange for others. Let your counsellor know what you need to ensure the best outcomes for you!
