Counselling: The Beauty of A Safe Space
The term “safe space” has been coming up a lot lately so let’s dive a little deeper…
What is a safe space? What happens in a safe space? Why are they special? Why are safe spaces necessary in the counselling process?
A safe space is an area where individuals or groups of people are ensured:
-confidentiality
-safety
-unconditional positive regard
-support
-understanding
-a platform to tell their story
-a person(s) to listen to their narrative
What happens in a safe space?
In a safe space, people can choose to be supported in silence, or they can speak about what’s going on for them. “Holding the space” for someone means that the listener stays with the speaker throughout their story/experience without judgement or trying to fix anything. Holding the space allows for support, safety and empowerment of the storyteller.
Safe places are notable because they allow for a unique experience. It’s not often that we find a quiet space in our day-to-day to speak about our fears, triumphs and all that’s in between without receiving input, advice or a story about another person’s experience with something similar. A safe space is a place of understanding, a place for learning, and most importantly, a space to feel supported and a sense of deepening into the self. It’s important to keep in mind that we all prefer to express our feelings through our own outlets. For some, a safe space might be a dance or art studio.
In counselling, one of the most important aspects of the process is establishing and strengthening the working relationship between a therapist and a client. This begins with a safe space and mutual understanding of the respect that is mutually offered in the session. Sana Counselling offers home therapy sessions in the comfort of your own home.
Safe spaces are becoming more common within public spaces in our society. Keep your eyes open for them and their purpose in mind!
