This past week (or two) has been wild. There have been so many changes in efforts to keep us all healthy and “flatten the curve” …if only we had a nickel for every time we heard that. To respect the suggestions of the medical community and government, many counsellors, including little old me, have decided to move our practices online. Does counselling online actually work though? Yes. Let’s look at the benefits.
Same Idea, Different Environment
For some clients, in-person counselling is preferable. However, during a pandemic when we have been asked to quarantine, we are not in the position of having our cake and eating it too. For those who prefer in-person counselling, I get it. However, trying online counselling is important for a couple of reasons.
The first note of importance is that your process isn’t disrupted. And, for those of you who are considering counselling, now is as good a time as ever, all things considered. Sure, we aren’t sitting across from each other and the energy might feel a little bit different but different it’s OK! The quality of our work doesn’t have to change, just because we have moved online. Also, if you’re used to in-person sessions, after a session or two online, the change becomes more routine, just like showing up to the office, and off we go!
Another important note is that for people considering counselling, starting online may be a little less scary.
Your Mental Health Matters
Online counselling offers us the opportunity to connect, and to continue to ensure that you’re on your desired track. Let’s look at connection first. As humans, we are social creatures and social isolation doesn’t do much for meeting our social needs (introverts you are so included here). Taking an hour out of your week to connect with someone (uncensored) to reflect on your well-being and needs is so important, and due to the wonders of technology, we are still able to meet and kick some serious ass.
Now, for the staying on track part. It’s not so easy to focus with the information overload lately. So many people I speak with highlight that they are noticing issues regarding productivity and motivation because of stress and overwhelm. Working through what’s going on with a counsellor can help you get back on track and find your new groove for the time being.
Accessibility, Accessibility, Accessibility
Online counselling is accessible if you have a computer, or a phone. If you have wanted to work with someone for a while but couldn’t find the time, here’s your opportunity and you don’t have to worry about transportation or rushing over when you’re off work. That is one massive plus. You don’t even have to choose someone in your own city. Oh, the possibilities.
Is Online Counselling Effective?
Yes, of course. Is it different? Yes, it is, AND it still works. Clients are still able to achieve their goals via online counselling. The experience is different but the outcomes are going to be similar. Most counselling methods can be adapted to work online and so for the skeptics, I get your concerns. Strange times can call for trying new things sometimes. Feel free to be in touch with questions.
Sending all communities hope and best wishes!
